May 18, 2011

Y’all know that when I find something I love, I have to tell the world about it! I recently read the book UNDECIDED: How to Ditch the Endless Quest for Perfect and Find the Career–and Life–That’s Right for You by Barbara Kelley and Shannon Kelley. I devoured it in three days and decided that I [...]

Lessons Learned So Far on my Writing Retreat

April 30, 2011

I don’t feel like my work is endless, I feel like I have accomplished something everyday, and if I maintain this pace, I should have an entire book by the end of the seven weeks. There are times when I want to try sprinting through the first draft of the book, but I don’t want to tire myself out 3/4 of the way through. I’d rather jog along at a steady pace that feels good and is getting me to where I want to be.

As a person of faith, you are always being watched–by other people of faith and by people who are curious and wanting to know more about your religion. It is your responsibility to live in such a way that people could look at your actions as an example and be drawn to learn more about your religion rather than reject it.

I had never taken the time to seriously think about this idea before:

Being too picky and having unrealistically high expectations could mean you end up with nothing at all or with a situation far less desirable and delayed at that.

For the last month, I’ve been hinting around about how I need to make some drastic changes in my life so that I can truly pursue writing and on-air hosting. Although all my plans are not 100% settled, I feel ready to share my plans with my nation of crazy girls. First, I’ll tell you [...]

3 Signs You’re Headed for a Spiritual Tsunami

March 14, 2011

Spiritual tsunamis occur when two elements in your life are at odds with one another and are causing friction in your consciousness. This friction can be ignored for awhile (just as a tsunami is not a threat when it is out at sea) but it will eventually make it to the surface of your life itself–and by the time it gets there, it will have gained enough momentum and magnitude to do some serious damage.

Why NOT You?

March 4, 2011

All too often, when we encounter a story of someone who has “made it,” whether it is a person who has achieved something similar to our career dreams, someone who found and married her perfect partner, or even just someone who won an award (that you didn’t even apply for), our first reaction is to dismiss any possibility of such a lovely thing happening in our own life.

Choose Your Problems Wisely

March 3, 2011

In the midst of our venting, I was able to take a step back and realize that, although we were both dealing with challenges at present, they were challenges that we both felt capable of handling, and were a result of choices we had made in the past. The problems we were presently facing had no real influence or power over our futures. If these weren’t the types of problems we wanted, we could simply make different choices going forward, and choose to have new problems…

Why Writers Are Unhappy People–And What I Intend to Do About It

February 24, 2011

Some contemporary thinkers are lashing out against the trope of the unhappy writer–not the individuals themselves–but rather our passive acceptance of the existence of the miserable, broke, and moderately insane word artist. It wasn’t until recently that I realized–or at least admitted to myself–that I too was headed on the path of being one of those miserable writers.

Get a Man Who Will Call You Out . . . With Love

January 20, 2011

One of the most important elements in a relationship is communication. While being able to discuss your problems, concerns, and thoughts is essential to a healthy relationship, there is an additional aspect of communication that contributes to the long-term health of a relationship. In the six months that Big and I have been back together, [...]
