Sometimes we Crazy Girls can forget how important our surroundings are to our peace of mind and spiritual well-being. This is a reminder to create an oasis for yourself in your home. You deserve it!
How to create an oasis for yourself:
Keep the clutter out of your sacred space. Clutter in your physical surroundings will clutter your mind and your spirit. I don’t care how much you hate cleaning, make time to de-clutter your surroundings. This means actually throw things away or donate them immediately—not just move them from one place to another!
You deserve a hotel bed every night. Ever since college, I have been excellent at making my bed a luxurious experience on a budget. To make my hotel bed, I bought a full-sized Ultra Plush Sealy Serta mattress and frame for $200 from a male student who only used it for a year (looked brand new), a queen-sized down comforter and two huge down European pillows (the big square kind) from the thrift store for $50 total, and then bought luxurious bed linens from Marshall’s for about $50 total. I also have a husband pillow for sitting up and reading in bed. I use it everyday!
Colors matter. Surround yourself with bright colors and lively patterns. Don’t overdo it though. We don’t want our rooms looking like a third grade birthday party. I prefer the color purple and circular patterns. I just bought this fabulous rug and put it in my room. It made me so happy to lie in my bed, and ponder how “together” the rug makes my room look.
Fragrance matters. From your shower gel to your perfume to your room fragrance, pleasant smells can drastically change your mood. I prefer lemon-scented bath soaps (such as L’Occitane’s Honey & Lemon hexagonal soap), jasmine-scented perfume (such as The Body Shop’s Neroli Jasmine Eau de Toilette), and cotton-scented room fragrances (such as Glade’s new premium products). Surround yourself with beautiful smells all day!
Light matters. Make sure that your oasis is flooded with natural light during the day, and that you have lamps and candles that can give you the light and mood you want in the evening. If you live in Boston like I do where you get starved of natural light, consider buying a Happy Light. My apartment-mate has one, and her room always looks so deliciously bright when she uses it. It’s like having your own personal on-demand sun!
Hang up some pictures! I am the worst at printing pictures and framing them. For over a year now, I’ve had a stack of picture frames with no pictures in them. My dad even bought me an electric picture frame, and it just sits idle on my desk. This craziness must stop! As soon as you finish reading this article, pop your memory card into your laptop, choose 5 pictures to get printed, send them off immediately to Walmart or Target, and have them delivered to you. Make it pain-free so that you’ll actually hang up the pictures.
So look around your bedroom and your apartment. Is your furniture comfortable? Do you have lots of light? Do you have room to do your work? Can you easily find your clothes in your closet?
Do you feel like you’ve stepped into a little piece of heaven when you come home? You should!

Yes!! We deserve nothing less than a beautiful sanctuary of clarity and well-being in our homes. A space to find our center again and again. I am an artist, designer and feng shui consultant and lover of all things sacred.
Thanks!!

Good post, Kaneisha. Have you thought of one day hosting a talk show on BlogTalkRadio as a stepping stone towards your TV career?
Hi Anon! I don’t actually know much about it. I think I’d really enjoy a radio show. My grandma has one and she loves it! I’ll definitely look into it! CrazyGirl Radio would be lots of fun!
