Are Black People Open-Minded?

by Kaneisha on September 7, 2009

KING ANNIVERSARY DEATH

I check my blog stats obsessively, and someone keeps typing in the search “Are Black people open-minded?” to get to my blog. Your first search was amusing to me, but now I want you to just go ahead and type in my name to get to my website. It’s Kaneisha. I’ll also answer to Miss Universe and Oprah’s Successor. But I don’t really answer to Random Open-Minded Black Woman.

But I guess since you are so curious, I should answer your question.

Yes, we Black Americans are open-minded. And we can also be closed-minded. We have hopes, dreams, and fears like everyone else. We’re just like you and your particular “people”. We are all different with different experiences. I don’t speak for anyone but myself (and my legion of Crazy Girls of course), but it makes me confused that this is still a question.

Maybe I should be more patient with you. Maybe you live in a place like Antarctica where there are no Black people. Whatever the case, I want you to know that Black people are indeed open-minded–not any more or any less than anyone else. In the U.S., we run the entire political spectrum. We don’t all vote Democrat. We don’t all support affirmative action. We aren’t all Christian. We aren’t all poor. We don’t all play sports. We don’t all dance well. We don’t all sing well. We’re diverse and different. And that’s good.

I’m curious why that search brings up your blog in the first place…

Well said! I’m so glad that your blog covers such diverse topics. It’s nice to read about a (REALLY) cute leather jacket one day, dating the next, and then racial bias/ignorance another day. Keep up the good work!

good response to an otherwise obvious question. i love the “Maybe I should be more patient with you. Maybe you live in a place like Antarctica where there are no Black people.” you know i was deprived of having african – american friends until i lived a year in ghana. i learned so much from those girls and we share such special memories, it makes me sad to think that i live in such a homogenously white community. not antarctica, though ;)

I wrote a piece about how I want to approach life with more of an open heart and open mind after realizing how I could have missed out on delicious, wonderful Mr. C if I had not been open to dating a non-Black guy. So I guess that’s one data point of Black open-mindedness for the searcher.
